title. 2. CASTING CONSIDERATIONS The cast calls for six actors: five men and one woman (or at least someone dressed as woman). As all characters are embodiments of either virtues or vices, there are no distinguishing features for any role, except that Youth should be a strapping young man. 3. CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS Charitys brother is Humility. Youth claims Riot as a brother, but Pride is presumably his servant, although Pride indicates that it is Pride that will do the ruling. He tells Youth, "If ye will be ruled by me/I shall you bring to high degree" (lines 337-338). 4. UNIQUE FACTORS The characters are all embodiments of virtue or vices or a human state, i.e. "Youth. 5. PROTAGONISTS Youth, Charity and Humility 6. ANTAGONISTS Riot, Pride and Lady Lechery 7. OPENING STASIS Charity presents himself as the embodiment of this virtue, explaining how no individual comes to God except through Charitys intercession. Charity states, "Jesu, that his arms did spread/And on a tree was done to dead,/From all perils he you defend...I am come from God above/To occupy his laws to your behove" (lines 1-6). As this indicates, Charity announces the moral orientation of the play. Youth speaks next and presents himself as the embodiment of youthful confidence. He is a young man full of vigor, and, therefore, feels invisible. Furthermore, he is full of himself for having recently inherited his fathers lands. He says, "Aback, fellows, and give me room...I am goodly of person...I flourish as the vine tree/Who may be likened to me/In my Youth and jollity" (lines 40-47). 8.
