simple. It was ornate and extravagant and regal, as well as rough and thick. The following paper examines the peasant clothing of the medieval times. Medieval Peasant Clothing When
we speak of peasants we speak of people who had to earn a living generally working off of the land. They were not wealthy and were individuals whose clothing needed
to serve many purposes, as well as remain sturdy and long lasting. They could not afford to have finer clothing because of the hard work they did. And, they could
not afford to have a lot of details on their clothing. Their clothing was functional and warm and sturdy. For the men the clothing generally consisted of woven stockings
or tunics (Learner.org, 2005). Women generally wore very long gowns and then topped that with a sleeveless tunic. The sleeveless tunic allowed for warmth when needed, as well as skirt
that could carry items if needed (Learner.org, 2005). Women and men generally covered their heads, with women apparently being required to much of the time (Learner.org, 2005). "Sheepskin cloaks and
woolen hats and mittens were worn in winter for protection from the cold and rain. Leather boots were covered with wooden patens to keep the feet dry" (Learner.org, 2005). Another
author notes that "A cloak or cape worn...provided warmth" (Encarta, 2005). In addition, men would often wear very simple pants that had drawstrings these were called braies (Encarta, 2005).
For the most part it appears as though the outer clothing was rarely washed but the clothing that was worn next to
