Geertz, in order to fully understand why a structure such as the Chartres cathedral was undertaken and built by medieval people, one first has to understand the way in which
the people of that era perceived the "relations between God, man and architecture" (Scott, 2003, p. 2). As this suggests, the goal of this examination of medieval cathedrals is not
only to describe the artistic features of these incredibly beautiful medieval structures, but also the way in which they reflect the principles and concepts of medieval Christianity. Thomas Hobbes,
in his text Leviathan (1651), characterized the life of the peasantry in any era as being "nasty, brutish and short," which brings up the question of why the people of
the Middle Ages, who coped with the plagues of disease, famine and blighted crops, should use their meager community resources to construct cathedrals that took extremely long periods of time
to complete (Scott, 2003). In large part, the answer to this questions is what historian R.A. Scott refers to as the "Gothic enterprise" (Scott, 2003, p. 11). The
"Gothic enterprise" began in the first half of the twelfth century, spread across Europe and continued for four centuries (Scott, 2003). Thousands of church buildings were constructed during the
medieval periods, which involved numerous activities of economic import, such as the "quarrying, carving and laying of stone, the harvesting of timber, the mining of lead, and the assembling of
(the) other materials" required by these massive construction projects (Scott, 2003, pp. 11-12). In addition to providing an integral mechanism to boosting medieval economies, the "Gothic cathedral was intended
