number of sociological, philosophical, and political perspectives. The Middle Ages are characterized by tremendous changes in regard to the demographic makeup of the region, the politics, the demography and
even military structure and alliances. These changes impacted numerous European countries. Britain, Holland, France, Spain, East and West Germany, Portugal and Switzerland, in particular, experienced quite notable sociopolitical
changes during this time period. The transitions that occurred extended to not just the most visible aspects of the societies in question but also to the more subtle aspects.
Both the most visible and the more subtle aspects of art, however, began to change in response to the same factors that were changing Medieval society overall. Art,
of course, takes a very broad swath across society. It encompasses literature, paintings, architecture, and even sculpture. Each of these branches of art evolved in accordance with the
predominant mindset that overtook the region. Christianity held the reins of much of that change and the impact of the church became particularly interesting in terms of medieval sculpture.
The "theory of dominant ideologies" argues that art is often used as a tool to reinforce existing power structures. An examination of one specific piece of sculpture of
the time (a sculpture of the Archangel Michael as he was depicted on a sixth century AD ivory panel from a diptych) the period would seem to affirm that argument.
Interestingly, the influence of Christianity started being apparent in the third century AD. This was the beginning of the Early Christian Art
