number of sociological and political perspectives. The Middle Ages was a time of tremendous change in regard to politics, demography and even military structure and alliances. These changes
impacted numerous European countries. Britain, Holland, France, Spain, East and West Germany, Portugal and Switzerland, in particular, experienced quite notable sociopolitical changes during this time period. These changes
extended to not just the most apparent aspects of the respective societies but also to the more subtle aspects. Art, in particular, changed in response to the same factors
that were changing society as a whole. Everything from the literature of the time to the paintings, the architecture, and even the sculpture evolved in accordance with the predominant
mindset that overtook the region. Christianity held the reins of much of that change and the impact of the church became particularly interesting in terms of medieval sculpture.
Interestingly, the influence of Christianity started being apparent in the third century AD. This was the beginning of the Early Christian Art Period,
a period that spanned all the way to the early eighth century AD. While there are hundreds of examples of great sculptures that were produced during this time, none
were more magnificent than The Archangel Michael as he was depicted on a sixth century AD ivory panel from a diptych (book cover). This sculpture, created right on the
even of classicism, marks the transition to the medieval style of art. Where in the earlier period there was more of an emphasis on producing a realistic style of
art, i.e the art of realism, this period is marked by symbolism and an apparent concentration on basic simplicity. This is very apparent in the Archangel Michael.
