due to the tribes constant movement. By 600 the migrations were relatively over, and the resulting kingdoms were generally along Europes current boundaries.
Much of art in medieval times was focused around Christianity. The image of the Madonna and Christ dominate, although any subject from the Bible might
have been used. It is important to remember that the major part of the populace was illiterate, and visuals were essential to both tell religious history, and to remind the
faithful how they were to live their lives in emulation of what they saw. Painting The paintings in this period share a
common thread in that they, for the most part, deal with religious subject matter. Mary, as Majestic Mother is seen time and time again in the paintings, signifying more than
just her popularity but rather her importance to Christians as an intercessor in difficult Medieval times. Not only was this a time
of fresco (painting on wet plaster) painting, but hand copied manuscripts also became small jewels of painting, called "illuminations." Diemund working in the cloister of Wessobrun from 1057 to
1130, produced some 45 manuscripts of "rare beauty distinguished by highly ornate letters and by small writing which is most elegant" (Peterson 13).
