Medication Aides. This research specifically addresses monitoring the self-administration of medication by mentally retarded clients and discusses what material should be included in a project designed to prepare Medication Aides for the task of effectively teaching mentally-retarded clients to self-administer their medication. Medication Aides, background information Many states have initiated legislation designed to relieve nurses of the routine task of medication administration, yet also these laws emphasize the importance of this activity in healthcare facilities by keeping it under proper regulatory supervision. In other words, many states have implemented Medication Aide Acts, which authorize unlicensed personnel, "Medication Aides," to administered medication within healthcare institutions, such as nursing homes and assisted living homes for mentally retarded clients (Burbach, 2000). These laws typically apply to settings in which one person provides medication for another, with the exception of the private homes. Typically, the activities of Medication Aides are highly regulated and narrowly defined (Burbach, 2000). For over two years, the authorities in North Carolina, including the NC Board of Nursing (NCBN), have been working together to develop state-wide standards for non-licensed personnel to administered medications (NCBN, 2005). As is typical in other states, medication aides in North Carolina will be allowed to perform a narrowly defined set of tasks (NCBN, 2005). However, the employer of these aides will be responsible for ensuring that systems are in place in regards to proper management and safety issues (NCBN, 2005). For this purpose, instructor and medication aids training manuals and videos have been developed. Training for Medication Aides in North Carolina consists of a 24-hour course and addresses the common routes for medication administration, but excludes injections (NCBN, 2005).
