"players" in the current debate on health care for the elderly; their different positions and ideologies; the political power seniors have; changes in attitudes towards care over the years; and
proposed solutions to the current crisis. Discussion The program Growing old in a new age - Societal and political aspects of aging is a good place to start examining this
issue. The video is an hour-long presentation that appeared on PBS and brings to light some of the problems facing our seniors. One of the basic points is that our
care of the elderly is largely determined by our culture, which in the U.S. is one of self-reliance and material success (Curlee, 1993). We have little inclination to help our
seniors because as a society we generally dont believe in helping each other; instead, we have been raised to think that hard work and determination will allow all Americans to
have a successful career and retire with enough money to take care of themselves in old age (Curlee, 1993). This is obviously untrue, and perhaps the greatest reason why we
can no longer follow this model is because medical technology can now greatly prolong life-perhaps make it too long. People now routinely live into their 80s and 90s; those who
survive to 100 are not uncommon. But the downside is that this aged population survives because of extraordinary medical care that is extremely expensive. Most of the money that is
