In 2006, Manderscheid reported that The World Health Organization predicted that depression would be the number one cause of disability by the year 2020. Mulder (2008) confirmed that depression is a major illness in the world and the occurrence of clinical depression is spreading and growing. Clinical depression is not simply a case of the blues or feeling sad about something. It is an identifiable mental disorder that is often misdiagnosed by primary care physicians (Holisticonline.com, 2007). And, if it is properly diagnosed, it is often mistreated by physicians who may prescribe too little or too much medication (Holisticonline.com, 2007). Physicians too often do not take the time to rule out other underlying causes for the symptoms, instead, they hear the symptoms of things like fatigue and sleep disturbance and diagnose depression when those symptoms could be related to things like nutrient deficiencies (Holisticonline.com, 2007). The DSM-IV (the diagnostic manual from the American Psychiatric Association) is very clear about the symptoms for diagnosing clinical depression. There must be at least five symptoms from the list that have lasted for at least two weeks (Holisticonline.com, 2007).
