it was defined as "To give a medical character to; to involve medicine or medical workers in; to view or interpret in (esp. unnecessarily) medical terms" (Aronson, 2002; 904). However,
the use of medicalization can be seen as occurring for many years before this. It is in human nature to try and explain why anything happens, to rationalise and then
seek to control conditions such as illnesses (Haralambos and Holborn, 2004). There is a great attractions in categorising a condition or symptom as a disease as this in turn implies
that there is a way that the condition may be cured or ameliorated with medicine and medical knowledge (Aronson, 2002). Many conditions, events and symptoms have been categorised at some
point as a medical condition. Today there is no credence given to the use of medical science to explain some more rationally
explained phenomenon, criminal activity, as well as aspects such as the development of morals and internal behaviour control mechanisms, this is an early example of medicalization with the use of
phrenology, but this was a serous area of medical study (Donovan, 1870). More recently more controversial issues have concerned issues such as the degree to which homosexuality may be a
medical condition. The medical profession has since moved on from this approach and the study of psychology has helped to add to understanding of different condition, but this does not
mean medicalization is not occurring, it ma y be argued that this is now more prevalent that ever and is found in the way an individual can experience healthcare. The
