science in improving the lives of human beings: although these can never be conclusively resolved, it can be argued that preserving life at all costs is not always the best
solution in all situations. It would be impossible to deal in depth with all the ramifications of this complex issue, and so we shall focus mainly on three representative examples:
genetic therapy and engineering, IVF, and euthanasia. It is interesting to reflect on the fact that the development of scientific research into human genetic heritage,
and the potential for manipulating and changing that heritage, is in fact a very recent innovation. Only a few years ago, techniques of in vitro fertilization (IVF) were considered revolutionary:
nowadays, IVF is considered an acceptable, almost commonplace, clinical procedure. More importantly perhaps, procedures such as genetic engineering and cloning, always considered to be confined to the realms of science-fiction,
are now so closely within the reach of researchers that they can be regarded as scientific fact. Not surprisingly, therefore, the parameters of ethical debate relating to scientific and medical
research have had to be expanded, so as to deal with these rapid advances which have been made in the past two decades. There
are a number of research initiatives which deal with genetic mapping, therapy, and modification. Gene mapping, which is fundamental to such programs, is a process of data collection and extrapolation
which began in the early 1990s. The ultimate objective of the Human Genome Project, on which scientists are collaborating on a global basis, is to identify all the genes and
base pair sequences which are found in human DNA and store this information: it can then be analyzed and later utilized in applications such as gene therapy.
