the unpleasant symptoms associated with chemotherapy; is effective in stimulating the appetite; and provides pain relief for some terminally ill patients who would otherwise suffer intolerably until death. This paper
uses the Toulmin model to argue in favor of legalization of marijuana for medical use. The Toulmin Model The Toulmin model is a method of developing an argument that uses
ordinary words and language so that an educated person can understand it (Reynolds). There are six steps to the Toulmin model: a claim, grounds, warrant, backing, qualifier and rebuttal ("Toulmin
Model of Argument"). Heres how it works: a claim is made; grounds for supporting the claim are offered; a warrant is offered connecting the claim to the grounds; backing supplies
additional information to support the warrant; qualifiers state how sure the person is about the validity of the claim; and rebuttal acknowledges those instances in which the claim may not
be valid ("Toulmin Model of Argument"). The most interesting part of the model is probably the warrant stage, because its not usually stated, but relies on the listener to recognize
the link between the claim and the grounds on which its offered ("Toulmin Model of Argument"). For example, the statement "Sue has a temperature, its probably an infection" relies on
the listeners understanding of the fact that fever is a typical sign of infection, though obviously its not the only one; nor is infection the only cause of fever ("Toulmin
Model of Argument"). However, because fever and infection often occur together, the inference drawn here is logical. In the case of medical marijuana, the claim we want to consider would
be constructed like this: claim: marijuana should be legalized for medical use; grounds: references to show the effectiveness of marijuana in medical settings will be offered; warrant: it is desirable
