foot problems, but while there have been a lot of maladies attributable to high heels, some studies have negated some of the connections. For example, one study showed that high
heels do not seem to contribute to osteoarthritis of the knee ("Knee Arthritis Study," 2003). Yet, the wearing of high heels has been linked with back pain (Karahan, 2004).
Of course, high heels can cause damage in many parts of the body, but when focusing on the lower extremities, what are the findings? First, a look at diagnosis of
conditions related to foot pain is relevant. That is where the problem usually starts. When doctors diagnose foot related problems they generally look for visual cues (Meisler, 1998). Usually,
a family history regarding foot problems are not available (Meisler, 1998). Hence, doctors focus on the problem at hand. Problems emerge not from wearing high heels occasionally, but from years
of wear (Meisler, 1998). Sometimes, in diagnosing a patient with a complaint about foot pain, the physician will examine both the shoes and the patients feet (Meisler, 1998). In fact,
the doctor may trace the foot to see if the shoe is too small (Meisler, 1998). What can go wrong when women wear heels? It can result in a
neuroma, leading to affected areas often between the third and fourth metatarsals (Christiansen, 2000). One study to demonstrate a relationship looked at gait and compared those with high heels
to those with low heels (Christiansen, 2000). There were differences in weight distribution (Christiansen, 2000). A similar malady is called hallux valgus along with bunion formation (Christiansen, 2000). Here, the
arches lose integrity or collapse altogether (Christiansen, 2000). Additionally, the heels provide an abnormal amount of force on the ankle as well as the rest of the foot (Christiansen, 2000).
