Paper Store, Inc. by K. Von Huben 9/2010 Please Introduction Marijuana has been prescribed for medicinal purposes in a number of
states. Predictably, this has caused a great deal of controversy. This paper considers the following questions: What conditions make a patient a candidate for marijuana? Can children be prescribed marijuana
or is it adults only? What are the benefits of this drug and what safeguards are in place to regulate its usage? Discussion Much of the problem with medical marijuana
stems from the fact that it is also a widely-known and recognized recreational drug. That is, it comes to the medical industry already carrying a lot of baggage with regard
to societys reaction to it. Marijuana is seen by many as a drug that has the potential to cause great harm; its a huge leap to be asked to consider
its medicinal qualities. Couple that with the general American distrust of well-educated people and scientists, and the result is a society that doesnt quite believe the claims that marijuana is
the drug of choice for some conditions. But in fact it is. There is also a conflict of legal jurisdiction between the federal laws regarding the use of marijuana and
state regulations. To date, 14 states have legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes, which puts the state in conflict with federal law, which forbids its use for any
purpose (Medical marijuana, 2010). In almost every case, when there is a conflict between state and federal law, federal law "controls," meaning that it is the law to be obeyed.
