The degree to which war has impacted medicine is phenomenal to say the least. Not only has war contributed to our knowledge
and expertise in treating injury, it has contributed to the way that we transport the injured. History teaches that the mechanisms of warfare have undergone an evolution which is
practically lengthy as the evolution of man himself. Hand in hand with the evolution of the mechanisms of warfare went an evolution in the manner we handled medical evacuations
of our injured. The battlefield demanded a regimented and highly effective system to transport injured troops. The troops must, after all, be moved from the field to places
where they can receive the most adequate care. The way we have accomplished this, however, has changed considerably over time. Since World War I the time from injury
to being in the hands of skilled medical personnel was lessened considerably as was the trauma a man was forced to endure in transport from the battlefield to medical personnel.
We owe these developments both to developments in technology and to developments in the way we view wartime medicine. Not all of
the technological developments we have witnessed in war have been positive from a medical standpoint. While in the early part of the nineteenth century warfare was limited for the
most part to the actions of infantry, artillery quickly made its way into the strategy and implementation of war. While many historians contend that artillery was used in battle
only as a support to infantry, which was considered the "queen of the battle", this was not necessarily the case in all warfare. This was especially not the case
