Ethical theory is a critical component of the medical arena. Consider, for example, the ethical dilemma that arises
when a ninety-three year old female enters a hospital without a living will, with serious medical problems that in most instances would demand immediate surgery, and with family members that
disagree as to whether such surgery should be performed or whether the aged female should be allowed to die peacefully as one family member insists she has clarified in the
past that she wishes to do. The ethical problems surrounding such scenarios are obvious. One involves the issue of medical resources. Callahan (1995) emphasizes that as more
and more advanced medical techniques become available people simply live longer and put a greater and greater strain on the nations health care systems. Value clarification can help us
work through those problems, as can a detailed exploration of the ethical framework that exists in medicine. Daniels (1985) contends that
the distribution of health care services must occur in accordance with the principle of equality of opportunity, that access to health care must not vary according to culture, race, or
socioeconomic status. The scenario presented above, however, is replete with ethical dilemma. The term "ethics" has been defined by numerous philosophers throughout history. One of the more recent
definitions is provided by King (1984) who explains that ethics is: "a branch of philosophy
dealing with values related to human conduct, to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actives" (Townsend,
