Upon examining the child, the nurse believes that the baby may have sustained an injury. There are in fact signs of this. The case study goes on to report that
after testing takes place, the X-Ray reveals bilateral femur fractures. The doctor talks to the mother about the injuries and she is visibly shaken and explains that the child is
in daycare. She relays the events of the day, explaining that she picked the child up from daycare and only noticed the disposition of the child then. While the baby
was admitted to the hospital, the doctor decided that this is not a case of child abuse and so should not be reported to authorities. Simply, a woman takes an
injured baby to an emergency room, but the physician in charge does not deem the injuries suspicious and does not try to find out what happened to the child. The
ethical issues go to the physicians obligation to report anything suspicious. While he may have concluded that the mother was not abusing the child, it is possible that the child
is being abused at the daycare, or his father or someone else is causing the wounds. It is unconscionable that a physician will see two broken femurs without any explanation
whatsoever. Also, in the hospital, no one is asking why the child may have broken bones. It is rare for a child to break bones accidentally other than the forearm
or bottom portion of the limbs. Further, an eight month old child should be under constant supervision. There should have been a story to go with this. The child sustained
the injury somewhere. Even if a daycare worker did not beat the child, the parents should have been told that the baby fell or that some accident occurred. The situation
