Learning Center (2008) at the University of Utah wrote that scientists have not yet determined the full extent of the this cells job in the body but all cells in the body stem from this one, thus, the name. Stem cells "wait for signals to tell them what to become" (Genetic Science Learning Center, 2008). When the stem cell gets a signal, it slowly differentiates what it is supposed to be, what type of cell (Genetic Science Learning Center, 2008). The signal tells the stem cell "to turn on certain genes and make new proteins" (Genetic Science Learning Center, 2008). Stem cells can be found and taken from early embryos, the umbilical cord blood and also from certain kinds of adult tissues (Sumanas, Inc., 2007). Embryonic stem cells are the most versatile and that makes them the most valuable in terms of research (Sumanas, Inc., 2007). Some cells such as embryonic cells are described as pluripotent, which means they have the ability to become many different kinds of cells (Sumanas, Inc., 2007). Totipotent cells can "form complete, mature organism" (Sumanas, Inc., 2007). Embryonic stem cells are the most pluripotent and are "derived from embryos generated by in vitro fertilization" (Sumanas, Inc., 2007). Leaving out a few steps, this leads to totipotent cells, which becomes the placenta and inside the blastocyst are numerous embryonic stem cells (Sumanas, Inc., 2007). It is then possible to pick up these stem cells with a small instrument called a pipette and they can then be transferred "to a Petri dish for culturing" (Sumanas, Inc., 2007).
