A license in esthetics can open up a myriad of opportunities for an individual. Among these are opportunities in the medical environment.
The practice of esthetics, of course, involves enhancement of the human body using techniques as diverse as manual manipulation, chemical alteration, and even modification using electrical means and instruments.
Typically the esthetic technician uses compounds such as makeup, depilatories, tonics, lotions, and waxes to smooth the skin, to remove or cover blemishes, and to remove hair. Processes
such as sanding and tweezing are used extensively as well. There is a considerable need for such procedures in the medical environment. Some of these procedures are quite
complex but others are relatively simplistic. Individuals with a license in esthetics that specialize in medical esthetics are called medical estheticians.
Bredel (2005) identifies ten essential skills/knowledge areas/abilities that characterize the profession as it is found in the plastic surgery or dermatology setting. These are the ability to manually
drain the lymphatic system, the ability to provide acne assessment and treatment, skills related to exfoliation, skills related to Fitzpatric and Glogau Classification, the ability to maintain sanitary working procedures
and to sterilize tools and surfaces as needed, an understanding of the chemistry of cosmetics, a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, a thorough understanding of the healing process as
it applies to wounds, an understanding of the benefits and costs of sun exposure, and finally the ability to complete a thorough patient assessment.
