the type of students being taught. In addition to this there are many theories and frameworks that can be applied to the way education takes place. Special needs students have a wide ranger of both similar and different needs compared to main stream children. The way a teacher interacts with and treats the children will reflect their mental models; therefore, it is essential that there is a basic understanding that metal models will have on adopted any particular mind set will be. Three models that can be considered are the medical model; the deficit model and the social model each have different positive and negative implications for a teacher. 2. The Medical Model The medical model of may be seen as the classic model for the perception of disability. This is a model where the problem is seen to reside with the individuals that are suffering from the disability and that the disability itself is an innate flaw. The inherent approach to the way that this deals with individuals that have the disability is through intervention to change the way that the disabled student is dealt with so that they can fit is with the status quo. This is a model that does not accept that there is anything wrong with society and the there is no acknowledgement of any need for change. This is a model that has a high level of alignment with the view of the World Health Organization (1996, p5) There are numerous negative aspects of this model; it is a model which has the starting point as the weaknesses of the pupil, focusing on what is wrong with them, which may have the impact of ignoring the strengths of that pupil.
