complains of being tired all the time. She is pale and a picky eater; her mother is a single woman who has little money to feed her family, so she
has to buy the cheapest food she can find. As a result, Amy is eating only pasta, bread and hot dogs; her only drink is artificial fruit punch. Without even
going to the Internet, it seems that Amy is probably anemic; she isnt getting the iron she needs. But lets let WebMD confirm the diagnosis. Its somewhat difficult to use
WebMD because it only lists certain diseases, probably the most common. Otherwise a user has to put in symptoms and see what results are returned. In this case, the only
usable symptoms are "fatigue" and "pale skin," which yield 20 results. However, with the hunch that this is anemia, clicking on that yields a list of various types of anemia,
including iron-deficiency anemia, which is described as a type of anemia that results because of a "lack of the mineral iron in the body" (What causes anemia?, 2009). The symptoms
of this condition include pale skin and fatigue, and the causes include "[A]n iron-poor diet, especially in infants, children, teens and vegetarians" (What causes anemia?, 2009). This would certainly fit
Amy, whose diet is heavy in carbohydrates, processed food and sugar. The hot dogs are the only source of iron, and they are so heavily processed theyre doing more harm
