work together with two common goals in mind: the first is to make sure that health care providers financial affairs are handled professionally and in an orderly manner; the second
is to make certain that health care providers get paid for their services in a timely manner (Coding and billing, 2006). The field of medical billing and coding is important
and growing, because all health care providers have need of these services, from the largest hospitals to the tiniest clinics (Coding and billing, 2006). As the population ages, more and
more people need health care, so the field will continue to expand, providing continuing job opportunities. The increase in the patient population also means that it is important for medical
offices, hospitals and clinics to manage their information more efficiently, handling more records in less time; that too is an important part of the medical billing and coding profession (Coding
and billing, 2006). "According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), health information technicians are one of the ten fastest growing allied health occupations" (Coding and billing, 2006). Having
considered the field as a whole, and shown that it is a growing profession with significant job possibilities, the student should now consider billing and coding separately. Although they are
similar, they are not the same thing. Common ground between the two occupations is the fact that both have to meet the "insurance and patient billing needs for the medical
