bad news is "more glamorous than good," and this is why we have given "dystopic predictions" much more credibility "than optimistic ones" (Rushdie, 1996). Rushdie works epitomize the
right to free speech, but that right has created a paradox, which is that while no news is good news, bad news is the only good news. By right
of the paradox, terrorism is the best news. Because terrorism has become the best news, terrorists use the media to expose their message by virtue of "objective" reporting, the purpose
of which is to report both sides of an issue. By staging violent acts like the kidnapping of U.S. citizens in foreign countries, the Oklahoma City bombing and the
bombing of the World Trade Center, terrorists exploit the link between the news media, public opinion, and political decision making. TERRORIST INTENT It is no secret that the terrorists
are interested in getting their message out via the news media. Every extremist group has an Internet web page, and if a name is dropped in the press, everyone
knows who they are and how to find out more (Marquand, 1998). Because of the violent nature of their activities, every extremist group is dependent upon the news
media to help them in this effort (Bremer, 1987). For most of the last 20 years, all kinds of terrorist activities were captured on video for display on the
nightly news. Now, the reports are larger due to the fact that terrorist activities are often the subject of hour-long news shows. Although this has resulted in a
