In the 19780s a similar effect was noted by Stuart Hall when looking at subcultures such as youth cultures and the role of the media (Hermes 2002). These may be seen as leading to some issues of nationality as they look at groups and the way the media can enhance or discourage the belief and feeling of membership or perception of identification with the perception of the values of that sub culture (Hermes 2002). Nationalism and the feeling of national identity also stems from a similar viewpoint. National identity is a phenomenon which is seen in most countries. It is reflected by the media in serious and less serious issues, we can even argue that the media encourages nationalism. Examples of an outward demonstration of nationalism resulting in a feeling of national identity can be seen by the way we will support our own country in the Olympic Games or other international competition, giving the citizenship a common cause. This means there will be jumping to its defence if it is criticised. The Eurovision song contest raise national feeling and the violence that arises out of football matches can be seen to be partly as a result of national identity; after all it is supporters of the one country which will take up violence against the supports of another.
