and heroism whereas black or dark complexion is synonymous with evil or sin. Also within these genres, virginal white female characters are usually depicted as helpless and not particularly
bright (i.e., the dumb blind), and those who have any street smarts usually acquired them on the streets as prostitutes. Black women have historically been presented as semiliterate and
performing some type of service capacity as a slave, maid, or caregiver. The media stereotyping of race and gender has gone a long way towards reinforcing prejudice. Growing
up in Kentucky, Gloria Jean Watkins (the acclaimed feminist and activist author/lecturer later known as bell hooks) recognized this racial and gender prejudice at an early age. She recalls,
