the media over the last six decades. But in exploring the relationship between media and society, pertinent questions include whether media are molders or reflectors of social and female structures
or whether the media just reveals the social changes that have occurred over the years. For example, in 2006 and the modern era, television shows like Keeping Up with the
Kardashians, Entourage and Ugly Betty give society, especially impressionable teenagers who watch these shows religiously, false impressions of wealth and power and responsible consumption. In fact, it leads many people
to believe that they can do what they see these actors do and live a lavish lifestyle just like the ones they see on television. The media gives these women
a sense of empowerment because of the amount of money they have but this was not always the case decades ago. Historically, women took a backseat to men and the
media depicted this as well. This essay will focus on three different years or eras and discuss how the medias portrayal of women has changed over the last six decades.
In the 1950s, television shows were obviously in black and white but they were also very conservative. Women revealed very little skin and they were seen as housewives who were
