way ownership is not limited to only a few companies. By the year 2000 there were only 5 - 10 media companies, compared to 50 a few decades before. Their
power is high as they not only control one form of Media, the control many forms of media and the way that the media is created (Bagdikian, 2004). Bagdikian
argues that media and the concentration of the media is contradictory to democracy. The arguments of bias in the media and how some messages will not gain media attention due
to the self interest of the owner is well known, where the messages that the owner want to be suppressed will be held back (Bagdikian, 2004). However, there are more
issues that simply the desire of the media owner, there arte broader control issues. McChesney (2002) argues that in a democracy where there is the model of profit driven
oligopoly media there cannot be the full support of democracy. In many models it is argued that it s the freedom of the press that acts as a check and
balance on the way political power is wielded, able to questions decisions and policies and influence the way they are perceived. However in reality, the media exists in an environment
that has been created by political policies and legislation, it is not a natural environment and the monopolies they create rely on these polices (McChesney, 2002). Therefore, government does play
