The mass media plays a vital role in the political process, but just how much influence do they have? With regard to elections, the media "gives interested parties an unparalleled
chance to talk directly with huge numbers of people" (Butler, 2006). That is, the candidates are given unprecedented coverage in the weeks and months leading up to an election. They
are also important on the day of the election, when their reportage of polls in the East can affect the votes in the West (Butler, 2006). If reporters on the
East Coast start projecting a huge winner when polls are still open in other parts of the country, its possible that voters "in these locations could see how different races
were being called, and could decide if they would bother voting" (Butler, 2006). Butler also reminds us that the media coverage of whats happening in campaign headquarters can have
an effect on public perception of the election. She uses the example of the Senate race in Virginia, in which the incumbent, Republican George Allen, said that "this had been
a long election, and continued to be so" (Butler, 2006). The media reported this and then repeated it throughout the night. They then went to Democrat Jim Webbs headquarters,
where Webb "marched in to bagpipes and proper naval protocol, and promptly declared victory" (Butler, 2006). The race was still in doubt at that point, but "once Americans saw this
image of Webb claiming victory, it became that much more difficult for Allen" (Butler, 2006). Webb was the eventual winner, but its possible that his confident appearance and announcement of
