she got tips on how to become anorexic due to a TV movie on Tracey Golds life (Zahn). Tracey Gold is another actress who had succumb to this potentially deadly
disease. And Abbey, the girl that MacKeen and Juris reference, is referring to help on the net from pro-anorexia sites, sometimes also known as "pro-ana" sites. The members of such
online clubs give each other tips on how to be successfully anorexic. Many have heard of anorexia nervosa. It is a condition where the sufferer has distorted body image (Harris,
Eberly and Cumella 24). While someone with anorexia is unusually thin, she considers herself overweight and fears gaining weight (Harris, Eberly and Cumella 24). As a result, anorexics eat
very little food. The condition in fact is "characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss" (Harris, Eberly and Cumella 24). People who are unfamiliar with the disease will mock
it. They joke about the fact that women in America starve themselves while people in third world countries starve because they have no food. It seems unconscionable that in a
land of plenty, there is starvation. Yet, this is a psychological problem. The sufferer is affected by media images and his or her mind becomes distorted. Through a barrage of
advertisements throughout ones life, there is a sense that no one can be too thin. There is a fear of being overweight. McKiernan writes that the average person is met
