A 4 page discussion of the manner in which the Iraqi people were depicted by the media during this turbulent time in history. The author asserts that although this depiction may appear negative from an American perspective, it really was a reflection of the Iraqi ideology. Just as the strong nationalistic tendencies of Iraq and the U.S. alike shaped the public perception of the affairs which were unfolding, so too did they shape the behavior of the American and the Iraqi people. The first war in the Persian Gulf was a time of intense emotion in the U.S. in particular. The media served as
the focal point for much of that emotion. This is understandable given that the Gulf War was the first international crises which occurred after the culmination of the Cold
War. The Persian Gulf War was the first major conflict in twenty years which involved American troops (Schmitt, 1996). Consequently, this affair was probably one of the most
televised and reported upon events in history. Americans watched the convoys of military personnel, both regular service and reserves travel across the highways of our nation en route to
the various ports from which they would be shipped out to the Persian Gulf. The country was flooded with yellow ribbons, some pinned to lapels, some dangling from car
antennas, some tied to the trunks of trees in the yards of those who had someone serving in the Gulf. Patriotism was definitely at one of its highest points
in the history of this country. The Gulf War brought out the humanity of our country. In Iraq, however, there were people that were also torn by the
events of the war. Media coverage of those people, however, revealed an image that from an American perspective was negative. Indeed, the media cemented American ideology that Iraqis
were the enemy. Whether this was a fair depiction is really a matter of perspective. Iraqis were not happy about American intrusion into their country and American media
