One is clearly a tragedy and the other a comedy, but they both possess similar messages and similar themes. With Medea we have a woman who is wronged by her
man and her only power lays in her sexuality and her prowess as a woman and a mother. She engages in acts of revenge that are horrible and shocking. In
Lysistrata we have a woman who uses her sexuality, and the sexuality of other women, to change the actions of the men. She engages in comedic and empowering actions in
order to get what she wants. The following paper examines the two characters, discussing personality, plan, and plea. Medea and Lysistrata The personality of Medea, as it involves
courage and intelligence, is one that feels something should be done about her husbands infidelity and his dismissal of her. She realizes that she truly has no power, on the
political or legal level, to stop him from taking another woman and pushing her aside. As such she understands that her only option is to use her intelligence and find
some way to seek revenge. Of course we see her as something of a psychotic woman who goes so far as to kill her own children in that plot of
revenge, but she is primarily using the only tools she has, those of her position as a woman and a mother. With Lysistrata we also have a woman of
great intelligence who knows that she has not political or legal power. Instead of trying to convince men they should not go to war, but they should stay home with
their families, she convinces all the other women to withhold sex from their men until they agree to stay home. While this is very different from Medeas personality in terms
