power, nor are they happy with the way in which social justice is carried out. Each of these women takes matters into their own hands, in one way or another.
We note that Medea is considered one of the most vicious women in ancient literature, while Antigone is much more of a sympathetic character. In the following paper we examine
the two women separately and then compare and contrast the two. Antigone Our first impression of Antigone may well be that she is a righteous and determined woman.
She is fighting for what she sees as a just cause. Her brother has been killed and because he is deemed a traitor the powers refuse him a burial. Antigone
fights for this cause claiming that her brother should have a righteous and honorable burial. But, because things do not turn out as she desired she ends up by killing
herself before the problem can be resolved. In this we see some weakness of character for she was not strong enough to continue with the battle, seeing its victorious outcome.
She was weak in this regard. She is a woman, however, who is clearly dissatisfied with the society that is run by men. It is their rules and their decisions
that determine how women should act and what role they can play in society. Antigones role was not accepted well, for she fought against the system. And, interestingly enough,
it was not only her focus on the injustice done her brother where we see her anger at the system. We can also examine the story of Antigone more
deeply and see some powerful illustrations that help us to see her essential personality. One of the underlying foundations for many of her qualities are often argued as being directly
