act as mans servant, both menially and sexually. To go so far as to say their treatment was barbaric, particularly in Greek and Roman mythology, would not be making
an extreme statement. Conspicuous to mythology is the way in which women were looked upon as expendable entities whose contributions were only as good as the men who abused
them. Women were represented as less than human by the manner in which they were mistreated. Routinely, they were forced to endure any number of physical, sexual and
emotional abuses merely because men knew they could get away with such horrific treatment. It is as though the very essence of a woman as a human being is
given no consideration beyond the menial labor tasks she was forced to perform, along with the cursory marital acts in which she was bound to engage. While mythological women
were strong of mind and spirit, they were not allowed to express their inner most beings in the presence of men. The male influence quelled any individualism that lay
dormant deep within the silent womans soul, waiting for the time - if ever - that she was permitted to become the individual she harbored inside. That said, Medea
