and how these can be applied in manufacturing to increase efficiently and productivity, decrease costs and support competitive advantages such as differentiation. 1. Introduction
Todays commercial environment is one where there are many pressures to increase productivity the same time as reducing costs. The need to maximize resources has increased the way
in which there have been cross overs and the transferring of skills to leveraging potential. It may be argued that one tool which can be used to help improve manufacturing
processes is that of mechatronics. This idea originated in the 1970s in Japan, where innovation was sought as the country was seeking to compete with more the mature industries of
other countries (Bishop, 2002). It is also worth noting that in China, where the Torch Program was started in 1988 in China, to help the area develop technology and competitiveness
part of the program included mechatronics (Jing, 1988). 2. Mechatronics Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary topic, that takes aspects of mechanical engineering, electronics and electrical
engineering and computer sciences and combines them as needed (Bishop, 2002). A good definition is that offered by Lancaster University in the UK; "Mechatronics is the synergetic combination of precision
mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and processes." (Lancaster University, 2004). This is sho0wn in a diagram in appendix 1. Technology has provided
many advantages for industry, however, the area known as mechatronics is very misunderstood due to the wide range of inclusions and its potential diversity with users making the definition with
reference to the elements they are using (Bishop, 2002). In effect this may be seen as much a philosophy as a tool (Bishop, 2002). The main aim of the philosophy
