The terms democracy, equality, freedom, and rights are an integral part of our American ideology. Our country, after all, was established by people
that were desperately searching for equal footing in their world. American history proves at more than one point that when people are not treated equal there is a reaction.
Sometimes that reaction is violent. Sometimes it is less dramatic but sometimes considerably more effective in the long run. Our system of government is optimal because it allows
for change when change is needed. When considering American history and the way it has revolved around the concept of equality it is
appropriate to first consider our founding fathers. Thomas Jefferson, for example, is remembered for his classical liberal tradition, a tradition entailing the challenge of the social order of feudalism
and providing a working alternative. He was concerned in particular with the appropriate role of government verses individual rights. He sought to not only to abolish feudalism but
to establish a system which worked in protecting the individual rights of all citizens. That system, of course, involved an emphasis on the importance of the spirit of community,
system which would respect individual rights and not establish mandatory arbitrary regulations which would deprive some citizens of their rights while affording additional rights to others. In one of
