twelve percent of live births in the U.S. are complicated by the presence of meconium stained amniotic fluid (Davis and Shekerdemian, 2001; Morabito and DiCarlo, 2005). Meconium is released through the anal sphincter of these fetuses as a result of the intestinal peristalsis caused by pre-birth asphyxiation (Davis and Shekerdemian, 2001). When the embryo gasps in utero meconium aspiration occurs (Davis and Shekerdemian, 2001). The meconium is drawn further into the respiratory system with the infants first breaths after birth (Davis and Shekerdemian, 2001). Thirty-five percent of these infants develop Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS) as a result of inhaling meconium stained fluid and of those thirty percent necessitate mechanical ventilation (Morabito and DiCarlo, 2005). Although Davis and Shekerdemian (2001, F1) note that only one in five hundred births are characterized by severe MAS and "characterized by profound hypoxaemia, where the coexistence of parenchymal lung damage"; Morabito and DiCarlo (2005) suggest that mechanical ventilation necessitated by MAS is required in four percent of all the live births in the U.S. Mechanical ventilation does not come without certain costs, however. These include obstruction of the airways, "atelecctasis, air trapping, and pheumothorax" as well as "chemical pneumonitis and inactivation of surfactant" (Davis and Shekerdemian, 200, F1). Although intrapartum suctioning is commonly employed in the delivery room to prevent infants from inhaling meconium, recent research suggests that is it largely ineffective in preventing MAS (Cuttini, 2004).
