that the building was created at a time when the thinking on housing had changed. That is, after the depression during the 1870s, it was believed that apartment living was
more practical than single housing structures and so buildings cropped up a bit more than did other types of structures (Bluestone, 1998). That said, people continued to see their houses
as homes (Bluestone, 1998). While they lived in apartments, which many think as temporary places to live, the people would decorate and create homes for their families. Apartment living was
the new desirable way of life, particularly in the city. It was a different kind of architecture as the designers made good use of shape, space and natural light (Bluestone,
1998). Yet, it combined spatial and social elements and was considered to be unusually cosmopolitan (Bluestone, 1998). Mecca was considered to be ahead of its time and was even the
first building to have indoor refrigeration, something possible due to the use of copper tubing that would go to each apartment ("Contact," 2009). While it had great beginnings, things would
not continue in that way. Mecca Flats, a building hailed as a great work of architecture, would be neglected. In fact, it would become something that would eventually be considered
a slum ("Contact," 2009). What caused the downturn? Why did Mecca Flats fade so quickly after being a very desirable building? Bluestone (1998) claims that race had something to
do with the neglect of the structure and the controversy that ensued. Bluestone (1998) remarks: "These changing perceptions stood at the center of a decade-long preservation struggle" (p.382). What also
