productivity in the white collar world, the plight of the university professor is explored. It is noted that faculty members do have a certain number of class hours and students
taught but something that is not very obvious is that not all student contact hours are the same. For instance, one professor may have had a significant number of student
contact hours if courses are offered in a large group setting where hundreds of students per class is a possibility. Other cases may entail the teaching of higher level students
where class size is small and so there are relatively few student credit hours generated. How might one measure success or competence if student hours are not truly measured
in a way that has meaning? The case study goes on to explain that a number of schools rely on data like an exclusive measure of teaching quality or
student course-evaluations. Peer review is another possibility and so measures of quantity as well as quality of instruction are employed. Faculty not only are expected to participate in peer reviewing,
recruiting efforts and curriculum and program development but they also play a major role in committees on various subject matters. Faculty sometimes give special lectures and these are often
provided at no cost or for just a small fee. Other unpaid services that are expected of college professors include the editing of academic journals or the creation of professional
exams. Another point made by the case study is that Professors are by virtue of their doctoral degrees and position, expected to contribute to the body of knowledge
in their subject areas. Hence, colleges and universities look for Professors who can generate research subsidies. A faculty member is also judged by the amount and quality of published research.
