or the science of earthquakes. It involves the tracking of the natural vibrations and movements of the Earth, as well as measuring, understanding, and moving toward being able to predict earthquakes. The student will discover that even the most basic of encyclopedic entries will explain that: "Different kinds of seismic waves are produced by the deformation of rock materials. A sudden slip along a fault, for example, produces both longitudinal push-pull (P) and transverse shear (S) waves" (Encarta). Different variations of push-pull movement in conjunction with shearing results in the back-and-forth movement of the Earths surface. The vibrations are the result of the "elastic strain" in the Earths crust which builds up, ruptures, and then has to "snap back." However, the question being considered as part of this project is how it is possible to measure such movement. What considerations must scientists make regarding the movement? And, of course, how is it best interpreted? The most basic considerations related to measuring earthquakes are briefly outlined here but the student is certain to find that there is a great deal more information available regarding specific processes, equipment, and interpretations of information as they research the topic. Measuring Earthquakes When an earthquake occurs somewhere, the news media is always quick to point out that it was this or that number (i.e. 3.5, 4.0., 5.7, etc.) on the Richter scale. Most people understand that the higher the number, the more powerful the quake but few understand what the number relates to, much less what the "Richter scale" actually is. Seismology is by no means a recent scientific endeavor. As the student researches the science, he or she will discover that the ancient Chinese and Greeks devised ways in which they attempted to measure what was happening during an earthquake. In fact, seismos is ...
