Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page research paper that discusses how to provide meaningful and worthwhile learning experiences. There is an old saw that goes that you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. As this cliche illustrates, a teacher may provide all of the information and instruction necessary for learning, but for a learning experience to be worthwhile and meaningful, that is, for actual learning to take place, the active cooperation and cognition of the student must be engaged. The goal, therefore, is to provide teaching and learning experiences that are effective, that is, that instigate thinking and learning on the part of the student. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

cooperation and cognition of the student must be engaged. The goal, therefore, is to provide teaching and learning experiences that are effective, that is, that instigate thinking and learning on
the part of the student. Exploring this subject, this writer/tutor interviewed a fourth grade teacher who is currently working with a class of low-income children living in a rural
county of North Carolina. In response to identifying the difference between thinking, teaching and learning, this teacher indicated that thinking, that is, cognition, does not necessarily lead to learning unless
the students can connect the subject matter to what they have already learned and experienced. In other words, she said that meaningful and worthwhile learning experiences" are those that help
the student to make "relevant connections across the curricula," which are connected to their own knowledge and experience. To accomplish this task, this teacher indicated that the teacher acts "more
as a facilitator, allowing students to guide their own learning." This teachers opinions and experiences coincides with and supports the evidence of current empirical research. Current scientific research on the
brain and how learning takes place supports moving away from a "mechanistic/Newtonian paradigm" that relies primarily on teacher-directed instruction and toward instruction that is more child-centered and student-driven (Williston 286).
This learning environment is one that allows for the "orchestrated immersion of the learner in complex experience" (Williston 286). In the traditional classroom, student desks, even in the lower elementary
grades, are organized in rows, facing the teacher, with instruction consisting primarily of the teacher lecturing and illustrating concepts on the blackboard. In order to facilitate student-driven learning experiences, rather
