They are an African American family who are expecting an insurance policy to pay off. As the story progresses they all have visions of what the money can mean to
them, what the money can bring, and through chaotic times we eventually see money bringing them a possible positive future. The following paper examines the real meaning of money in
Hnasberrys play. Money in "A Raisin in the Sun" In this story the main character, Mama, is the matriarch of the family and she is expecting an insurance
check to arrive. She lives in a house with many different family members and it is her dream that with this money they can actually put a down payment on
a house and thus she can see a dream come true. However, for her money means nothing but the ability to possibly have that dream. In the beginning of the
play we see that she is certainly not consumed with this money that will be arriving. She is not anxious about it, but rather simply expects it and yet if
it never arrived she would not be devastated. It is, after all, only money. This is somewhat reflected in her daughter in law whose son, Travis, says "Mama, this is
Friday. (Gleefully) Check coming tomorrow , huh?" (Hansberry 8). Ruth simply replies, "You get your mind off money and eat your breakfast" (Hansberry 8). We get the clear sense that
Ruth is not controlled by the money that will arrive. And she constantly argues with her husband, Walter, that it is not his to spend, it is his mothers. The
