at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario are at least trying to understand what its like to live on the streets-by doing it themselves. Three McMaster students, Stephen Gagne, James Fitzsimons
and Rami Reda, "are going homeless this week, living outside of the McMaster University Student Centre to raise awareness about homelessness" (Thomson, 2005). Each of the three has a
sleeping bag, one change of clothes, and a pillow; for food the students will rely on donations instead of purchasing it themselves (Thomson, 2005). Thus far, the students
say the "response has been positive," describing how one couple gave them bottles of water and sandwiches (Thomson, 2005). The couple had seen the students on a local newscast
and wanted to help (Thomson, 2005). The three students are members of the DeGroote Commerce Society (DCS), which is also "collecting clothing, canned goods, hygiene products and monetary donations for
Good Shepherd Centres around Hamilton" (Thomson, 2005). Anyone who wishes to make a donation of any kind can drop them off with the students in front of the Student
Centre, or bring them to Room 133 of the DeGroote School of Business (Thomson, 2005). Of course we can argue that the students are students, not really homeless
persons, and that will dramatically change the perception of those who see them sleeping on the sidewalk in front of the Centre. Many, if not most, people ignore the
homeless, stepping past them and pretending they dont exist. Some of this may be a defense mechanism: homeless people are usually dirty and unkempt; some may be dangerous.
Its unnerving and unpleasant to try and talk to someone who is mentally challenged, or seems to be looking for a fight, or who reeks of filth. So
