Introduction McDonalds is the worlds leading fast food chain, with a turnover of $24, 075 million earned across 118 countries in which there are operations in excess of 31,000 restaurants (McDonalds, 2011). The firm has a large number of company owned restaurants, but 77% of the restaurants are under a franchise agreements, many with strategic partners, as seen in India. In order to gain this success the firm has had to undertake a strategy which will provide for a uniform experience of fast food in each country in each restaurant. Initial expansion saw the chain using a standardized strategy, but as the firm expanded and needed to adapt to local tastes there has been an increasing level of localization, with the menu adapted for local tasks, including the use of Seafood in Scandinavia, increased garlic in France and the Maharaja Mac, made from lamb patties rather than beef in India. There are also many uniform items that are found throughout the globe, where they are the same or very similar. Furthermore, the dependable experience which is part of the reason behind the success of this firm relies on not only service, but the consistency and qualities of the inputs are also key to the delivery of this experience. The sale of food and beverage items requires a large amount of inputs, with the inputs, including many perishable items, which needs to take place across the globe there is a great deal of potential for variance.
