the restaurants are operated under a franchise agreement (McDonalds, 2009). The y that firm has developed over the years reflects a number of influences and expansion strategies. The firms
history started in 1940 as a single roadside diner in 1940, call McDonalds Bar-B-Que founded by two brothers; Dick and Mac McDonald. Located in San Bernardino, California, the restaurant has
a large menu and the usual type of service. The restaurant carried this way until 1948 when the restaurant was shut for a period of three months and reopened with
a new format; this was the start of the modern McDonalds format (McDonalds, 2009). The restaurant became a self service and drive in restaurant, which sold only a small number
of items; nine, and aimed to provide a very fast service and in 1949 the restaurant chain introduced the French fries and the extra thick milkshakes. It was as a
result of the sale of the milkshakes and the use of the multimixer milkshake machines that Ray Kroc meet the brothers (Kroc, 1992).
Kroc had heard of a California hamburger stand that was using eight of the milkshake machines (Multimixers) that he was selling at the time. In 1954 Ray Kroc went
to see this hamburger stand and was amazed at how quickly all the customers were being served (Kroc, 1992). This gave him an idea. With this idea he went to
the brothers that owned the stores and sold them on the idea of opening several more restaurants, to each he could sell an additional eight Multimixers. Kroc went on the
form McDonalds that is seen today, with his first restaurant opening in 1955 in Des Plaines (Kroc, 1992). The firm grew rapidly, in 1958 they sold their one millionth hamburger
