Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page essay that focuses on the character of John Singer in Carson McCullers' The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Singer has been described as a "deaf mute, living with the man he loves, in a small Southern town where all the other outsiders come to tell him their sorrows" (Schulman 39). This summation concisely conveys the action that centers around Singer, but it fails to convey the immense loneliness and suffering of the man that so many of the townspeople make their icon. The writer examines the ways in which the other characters in the novel come to depend and confide in Singer, as well as Singer's relationship to his friend Antonapoulos. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

loves, in a small Southern town where all the other outsiders come to tell him their sorrows" (Schulman 39). This summation concisely conveys the action that centers around Singer, but
it fails to convey the immense loneliness and suffering of the man that so many of the townspeople make their icon. As one critic puts it, "The black Communist doctor,
the lonely union organizer, the young tomboy, the sexually confused bar owner--all come to Singer, the man who cannot hear or speak" (Schulman 39). The "signature characteristic of Carson
McCullerss fiction is her abiding preoccupation with loneliness" (Fowler 260). As Singers muteness suggests, he is walled off from true communication and trapped within the prison of his loneliness. The
following examination of McCullerss classic novel focuses on the ways in which people reach out to Singer in their loneliness, never understanding that the man they see is largely the
product of their own imagination and needs; just as Singers dedication to his friend is Antonapoulos stems fr0m his own needs and desires. As the novel opens, Singer and
his friend, Spiros Antonapoulos, both deaf mutes, have lived together for ten years. When Antonapoulos becomes ill, it appears to cause a personality change that eventually results in his cousin,
who is also his employer, having him committed. Singer is devastated., as Antonapoulos was his world; his main human contact. At the school for the deaf, Singer was taught to
talk with his hands, and also how to speak with his mouth, but this never felt "natural to him, and his tongue felt like a whale in his mouth" (McCullers
9). From the time he had meant Antonapoulos, he had not tried to speak "with his mouth," as "with his friend there was no need for this" (McCullers 9).
