same page, but the people who were most vocal leaned very much to the right, and the leader of this movement against communism was Senator McCarthy. While Joseph McCarthy
and his cohorts were against communism, they were more than just anti-communists. Someone might be against communism ideologically and that is fine. Having different ideas and being able to express
them is aligned with the spirit of free speech. However, "McCarthyism" is considered to be an extremist position on the subject, seeing anyone who might be sympathetic to the communist
cause as being unworthy of U.S. citizenship. Some people were on trial for communist ties. There had been a blacklist in Hollywood. Anyone thought to be leaning towards communism would
be blacklisted and could not get a job. These are unfortunate things. Senator Joseph McCarthy would lead this frenzy against communism. In 1953, in regard to what McCarthy
had started and his status at the time, the Wall Street Journal reported the following: ""The lesson is that whatever political ground may be under Senator McCarthy has been largely
built with the gratuitous aid of his political enemies" ("Ending the Issue," 1953, p.8). In combing through old newspapers and other writings, it becomes apparent that the coverage of the
matter was varied, but there was seemingly a government preference. After all, people in the news media were also suspect and no one wanted to be on the black list.
With that in mind, stories from the newspapers at the time do help to tell the tale. Yet, they must be viewed with a grain of suspicion as after all,
