difficult to teach science from the text because it does not necessarily go along with the school curriculum. Other issues crop up for teachers as well. The article focuses on
one suggestion which is to ask students to write essays about the worst science activities that they have encountered. This is an activity that provides feedback for teachers so that
they can effectively plan lessons. One example of why some assignments fall short is related to the fact that at times, kit activities are simply lacking in content. One
example provided is a kit that does not allow for the possibility that the children will want to investigate their own questions. Sometimes, it seems that there is too much
structure in science and not enough leeway for students to focus on peripheral issues. Students have queried that teacher as to why time is wasted on an assignment that merely
looks for bad activities. It is explained in the article, and relayed to the student, that the assignment provides a way for them to choose scientific pursuits. It helps them
to weed out the good from the bad. The author concludes, in respect to this assignment: "Some even place this assignment in their final portfolio as an example of an
"ah-ha" moment in the course" (McArthur, 1999, 46). An example is provided of a Worst Activity essay and the main point to come from it is that some science
activities found in books are limited in scope. Perhaps the most profound revelation to come from this piece is that the nuts and bolts of science that are taught is
