450 million major appliances in American homes were ripe for replacement ("Maytag," 1985). He predicted that an age of great product innovation would meet the needs of the way
people lived (1985). Maytag would fill the needs of the people. While historically cautious and debt-averse, Maytag did expand during the 1980s, making a number of purchases ("Maytag Corporation," 2002).

to be consolidated with other Maytag divisions (Giesen, 1988). There was planned an expansion of the capital spending program which would extend to the end of 1990 (1988). Executives
