a community of hardworking and gentle people, the Pilgrims, who founded the nation. After that it seems little is heard about this new land until the struggles of the American
Revolution. In Nathaniel Philbricks work Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War the author sets out to illustrate much of what is never learned in school as he details
the reality of the people and the environment of the time. The following paper offers a book report of Philbricks work. Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick As mentioned, when people
think of Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims they generally think of people who were kind, generous, and gentle people who got along with the Native people. One author notes a perfect
image of this when stating, "The Pilgrims had much to celebrate, they had built homes in the wilderness, they had raised enough crops to keep them alive during the long
coming winter, they were at peace with their Indian neighbors. They had beaten the odds and it was time to celebrate" (The Pilgrims and Americas First Thanksgiving, 2007). What
is not often told is how the Pilgrims would have died without the help of the Natives, and how the Pilgrims, the Puritans, felt that the Natives were heathens and
were not much more than animals in many respects. In the winter prior to the one which was preceded by a Thanksgiving, the Pilgrims had lost almost half of their
