The vessel is ceramic and stands 8 1/2 inches high (21.6 cm.). Mayan polychrome ceramic vessels, such as this one, are art objects of surpassing beauty, but they also served
a utilitarian purpose, as their brightly painted "renditions of Maya myth and courtly life" document the history of that people to the scholars who study the symbolism and motifs of
Mayan art ("Cylindrical Vessel"). However, interpretation of the various motifs and the stories that they tell sometimes remains elusive, even for scholars ("Cylindrical Vessel"). Nevertheless, the images on the vessel
display the "costumes, architecture, and activities that were part of Mayan life ("Cylindrical Vessel"). The scene on this particular vessel pictures life at court. An "elegant young lord, seated
on a throne" who wears a "grand feathered headdress and a large collar of beads and pendants" is prominent ("Cylindrical Vessel"). Two other male figures who are of "lesser rank"
are seated facing the young lord and between them sits a vessel that appears to be quite similar to the "one on which they are depicted" ("Cylindrical Vessel"). The vessel
